SYTYCD Canada: Vancouver and Halifax Auditions
Before I begin with tonight’s recap of “So You Think You Can Dance” Canada, I need to get something out of the way. Guest judge Mary Murphy (best known for judging the American show) needs to stop screaming. There are other ways to let competitors know that they can dance—without jeopardizing anyone’s hearing.
Now for the recap.
Tre Armstrong was substituted by fellow permanent judge Jean Marc Genereux (best known as a choreographer for the U.S. “SYTYCD”) and special guest judge Paul Becker—head choreographer for the Jonas Brothers—also made an appearance at the Vancouver auditions.
Jeremy, a 25-year-old construction worker, performed a modern dance solo that included too much running and not enough…dance. B-girl Natasha Gorrie strutted her moves and, although the judges agreed that she “hit it”, Gorrie still had to prove she was worthy of a ticket to Toronto by going to choreography.
After 45 minutes of Blake McGrath’s (also a finalist on the first SYTYCD in the US), gruelling choreography, the judges have made their decision and, along with Gorrie, granted a handful of lucky dancers their ticket to Toronto.
The judges continued to be critical, but once again not unnecessarily so. Heather Morrison who, I’ll admit, performed beautifully pulled her hamstring at the end of her solo, but the judges were amazed and sent her to the final anyway.
Before the show headed out to the East Coast, 35 dancers from Vancouver moved forward to the finals in Toronto. In Halifax, judge Tre Armstong returned to the judging chair alongside Dan Karaty — a well-known choreographer from the American version. But does the East Coast have what it takes to impress all of Canada? Or how about the judges?
Not at first. Karaty labels dozens of performances as “unsexy” and “untalented.” And after a long morning—only one dancer moves on. After countless of rejections, cheers and tears, a few dozen of competitors from Halifax join the rest of the SYTYCD contestants in Toronto.
Tune in this Wednesday at 8 pm ET to CTV for the Montreal auditions.
