Montreal Film Fest Announces Tributes, Lineup
Film legend Tony Curtis and powerhouse producer Alan Ladd Jr. will be honoured for their lifetime achievements at this year’s Montreal World Film Festival.
The tributes were among the upcoming highlights of the festival announced by organizers Tuesday.
They also unveiled the lineup for the 31st annual event, which runs from Aug. 21 to Sept. 1.
The festival will open with “Faubourg 36,” also known as “Paris 36,” a French feature film about three dance hall veterans who stage a musical in Paris circa 1936. Director Christophe Barratier’s previous film, “Les Choristes,” was the closing film at the Montreal fest in 2004 and earned two Oscar nominations.
Altogether, 234 feature films (including 105 world premieres), 13 medium-length movies and 208 shorts will be screened.
Festival attendees can also look forward to a master class given by Brian de Palma. The U.S. film director is known for his psychological thrillers (”Carrie”) as well as crime dramas (”Scarface,” “The Untouchables”).
Curtis and Ladd, who will receive two separate tributes, are being honoured for their decades-spanning work in the movie industry.
Curtis has appeared in such films as “The Defiant Ones,” which earned him an Academy Award nomination, and “Some Like It Hot.” He most recently appeared in the drama “David & Fatima.”
Ladd’s tenure as president of 20th Century Fox saw the release of iconic films including “Star Wars” and “Alien.” His own production company, The Ladd Company, also produced such movies as 1995’s Oscar-winning “Braveheart.”
