On Tuesday’s episode, some of the Idol wannabes struggle to overcome nerves, get tripped up by Rihanna’s “Umbrella” and crack under the pressure for a spot in the top 22. Make that top 24.
After the vocal showdown between Lisa Bell and Marie-Pierre Bellrose leaving the show in a cliffhanger, tonight’s show begins with seeing both of them make it through to Day 3, the final day of auditions.
The Idol wannabes now all perform one last time for the judges and Omar Lunan of Scarborough, dedicates his Day 3 performance to his brother, who was shot and killed last December. He sings “Break It Gently.”
Other familiar faces that are seen singing include the Pigott brothers, Kristine Lankinen, Vincent Vorkpor, Jade Padua, and Mitch MacDonald. Ramil Omosura, 23 of Vancouver is shown for the first time and you’re left wondering how he ever made it this far.
Drew Wright, 28, of Collingwood, ON received news on Day 2 that his grandmother had died and he had wanted to go home, but his family told him to stay. He performs “She Will Be Loved” by Maroon 5.
Both Katelyn Dawn and Adam Castelli forget the words when performing their versions of Rihanna’s smash hit “Umbrella.” The situation is only made more embarrassing by the fact that half of the melodic song is “ella ella eh eh eh.” “I’m at a loss for words. I don’t know what just happened there,” Castelli says. “The words just slipped my mind.”
It’s then time for the final cut. The first to enter the auditorium is Mark Day of Portugal Cove, NFLD. “I have come to the conclusion that your true calling is to become a comedian. But we all love a singer who can make us smile,” says Sass Jordan. Mark Day makes it through. “Is there a paramedic standing by because I’m about to pass out,” adds Day.
The top 22 is slowly revealed until Jessica Sheppard and Paul Clifford are the final two to face the judges, after 22 have already made it through. “So we have our top 22,” says Jake Gold. “So welcome to the top 24.” In another first for Canadian Idol, the wealth of talent expands the finalist selection by two.
Also new is the uneven gender mix, with 15 men and 9 women comprising the top 24. The top 24 will perform in mixed groups of men and women over the next three weeks, abolishing the gender division when it comes to eliminations.
