Canadian actor Aaron Ashmore is the newest addition to the cast of “The Thaw,” an indie thriller also starring Val Kilmer and Martha MacIsaac.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Anagram Pictures feature will revolve around an Arctic research team who must face off against a killer parasite when it escapes from a melting polar ice cap.

Ashmore, 28, will play a college student who is part of the unlucky crew.

Mark A. Lewis, who previously directed 2004’s “Ill Fated,” co-wrote the script with his brother Michael and will also direct.

The movie begins shooting in Vancouver Monday.

It’ll be Ashmore’s second thriller in a row – the Richmond, B.C.-born actor recently finished work on the horror movie “Deep Cove” opposite Haylie Duff.

His past credits include the title role in the 2004 Canadian TV movie “Prom Queen: The Marc Hall Story,” the part of Jimmy Olsen on “Smallville” and a recurring role on “Veronica Mars.”

He is the older twin brother of Shawn Ashmore, also an actor.
