Canadian Idol Recap
The weather may be the only thing that’s heating up, judging from tonight’s Canadian Idol.
Featuring auditions from Montreal, Vancouver and Winnipeg, tonight’s episode saw a mixture of delusional contestants, missed notes and questionable judging decisions.
The Montreal auditions, known for its more fashionable Idol wannabes, saw Melanie Ouimet, a junior webmaster from Ingleside, Ontario sing an original entitled “Mel-licious.” But her audition is more malicious than mel-licious.
A montage of Ben Mulroney bloopers keeps the audience at home distracted from wondering when they’re going to see real talent. Proving that there must have been something in the Montreal water, the judges give a golden ticket to Phillipe Langlier, 26, of Bouchverville, Quebec who sings an original metal song. Despite the majority of grandmothers across the country being more metal than Langlier, he makes the top 200. “For the hell of it,” says Zach Werner.
As the auditions head to Vancouver, Mulroney is proud to tell us that every year Canadian Idol has been on the air, they have had at least one person from the Vancouver auditions make it into the top 10; an impressive track record.
James Thomas-Hall, 26, of Nanaimo, BC is the most memorable of the Vancouver auditions singing original songs that include such titles as “The Vomiting Song” and “This Song Is Going To Get Stuck In Your Head.” The judges tell him to record a children’s album and dismiss him from the competition.
Pat Milino, a 22-year-old hotel singer from Vancouver, BC hopes to croon his way into the competition. After receiving an endorsement from Dal Richards, Canada’s King of Swing, he performs for the judges and gets a gold ticket. Vincent Vorkpor, 23, of Burnaby, BC lyrically tweaks “I’m Every Woman” to “You’re Every Woman,” dedicating the song to Sass Jordan. Despite mediocre vocals, the judges surprisingly like him and he makes the top 200.
For the Winnipeg auditions, Jully Black takes over the hosting reigns from Ben Mulroney, who is away covering the Oscars. Once again, Black steals the show with hosting chops that top both Mulroney and his American counterpart, Ryan Seacrest. The Winnipeg auditions see the typical barrage of people who are tone deaf along with auditions from Kayla Luky, Katelyn Dawn and Steven Porter.
Luky, a 19-year-old from Venlaw, MB has long, straw coloured hair and is wearing Ugg boots and an oversized floral dress. Accompanied by a guitar, she sings “Black Horse and the Cherry Tree.” Werner exclaims, “I think we just got Luky.”
Dawn, 18, from Steinbach, MB receives a drastic disagreement from the judges. “If you’re not in the top 10 of this show, I’m a monkey’s uncle,” says Zach Werner. Sass Jordan disagrees. “I think I’m the sole voice of dissent. I find what you did is totally non-descript and so I say no.”
16-year-old Steven Porter of Lorette, MB performs Moondance by Michael Buble. Porter resembles past Canadian Idol winner Kalan Porter, substituting the signature curls for a faux hawk. “Steven sings like a bird and he’s hugely talented,” says Sass Jordan.
The audition rounds continue in Ottawa, Hamilton, St. John’s and Halifax tomorrow night at 9PM EST.
