The “Sex and the City” movie proved to be a big hit for ladies (and perhaps men) this weekend at the box office, opening with an unprecedented $55.7 million in the United States, estimates studio Exhibitor Relations Co.

The debut makes the movie the highest-opening romantic comedy of all-time, surpassing the likes of “Hitch” ($43.1 million), “The Break-Up” ($39.2 million) and “Knocked Up” ($30.7 million).

The movie debuted with a better-than-expected opening, by taking in nearly $27 million Friday alone. Fans around the nation watched the film’s women-led cast of Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon and indulged in the characters storylines and Manolo shoes.

The movie will easily cover its $65 million budget, considering overseas grosses have yet to be reported.
