For those of you suspecting foul play in your homes or offices and want proof of your paranoia on a budget, Swann introduces the Do-it-yourself Digital Private Eye. Built to mimic a standard motion sensor device, this product has a built in pinhole camera designed to take low resolution colour photos every time it senses motion up to 15 feet away, 3 seconds apart.
The Digital Private Eye comes complete with the motion sensor camera unit, an AC power plug, wall mount, two screws to mount the unit, software disc, and a bonus SD memory card. Users can mount this unit on a wall and snap up to 30,000 photos on a 1 GB SD card, powering the camera by either battery or with the AC plug. The unit has a camera button (in case you wish to snap a picture manually), a power switch to save energy when not in use, an SD card slot as well as a plug for a USB cable to upload your photos and see what the camera has caught.
The security camera itself is quite concealing, with a small hole about a millimeter in diameter, you otherwise wouldn’t know this was a camera. When mounting on a wall and using a battery, the Private eye is totally inconspicuous. Built from plastic, the unit looks and feels exactly like a motion sensor unit for a security system and if placed correctly would fool even the most paranoid visitors.
The actual quality of photos could have been better, with an emphasis on space and quantity of photos over quality. You will be able to clearly see what the person caught on film is doing but otherwise you might not be able to see specific features of that person like facial features or minor details. With each photo being roughly 50kb in size with the sheer amount of photos being taken some images might give more information than others but in reality this would be caused more by sheer luck then the image resolution.
The product is solid and easy to use, the concept great for those who feel uneasy about their possessions while they’re away and the camera subtle to the untrained eye. I totally recommend Swann’s Do-it-yourself Digital Private Eye as you can be sure to know if your nanny is trustworthy or what your dog does when you’re not around on a tight budget. If you have a little extra to spend however, you might want to pick up a smaller, higher detailed video security camera which Swann also offers.
