White Stripes Sued By Former Radio Host
The White Stripes are being sued over a sample they used on their sophomore album, De Stijl.
Their song “Jumble, Jumble” features a 10-second clip from a Radio-Canada show hosted by Dominique Payette. In it, Payette speaks to a caller about one of the girl’s first time experiences.
“They use the child’s choice in a very cavalier way,” said Payette in a Radio-Canada interview. “I have two choices: Either you go to court or you do nothing. I decided to do something.”
Payette says the brother-and-sister duo never got permission to use the clip, violating her privacy under Quebec law.
Payette, who currently teaches at Laval University in Quebec City, is suing the band, Third Man Records and BMG Music Publishing Canada for $70,000. She is also requesting that all copies of De Stijl be removed from stores.
De Stijl was released in 2000.
