The Startech InfoSafe External Slim USB 2.0 DVD +/- RW Dual Layer Drive is the name of the item and pretty much describes the product in its entirety– a compact portable, DVD drive that does almost everything a DVD drive is required to do. The obvious question is, why would I need an external DVD drive if I have a DVD drive in my computer already. The answer is ‘versatility’. Chances are, the built in drive in your computer is limited in several ways and the Infosafe will bring you up to date easily and somewhat economically, particularly for those who have upgrade needs in connection with older laptops.
The infosafe drive specs are quite impressive as it reads and writes almost any practical format including dual layer DVDs. Recently I updated my iMac desktop computer to the latest operating system and the built-in DVD drive of the iMac could not burn a back up disc of the new Apple OS dual Layer DVD disc. The iMac could READ the Dual layer disc but once again, it could NOT burn a back up of that dual layer disc. Plugging the Infosafe External USB 2.0 Dual Layer Drive into the iMac instantly solved the problem and I was able to make a backup of the Apple Dual Layer DVD. If you have an older notebook computer that does not have a DVD component, the Startech is touted as the perfect accessory. The slim drive features a tray loading Panasonic mechanism that provides the freedom to play DVD’s and CD’s, or copy and transfer data relatively quickly – 5x DVD-RAM write speed, 8x (DVD+RW), and 6x (DVD-RW) as well as the mini CD format.
The Startech DVD burner is compact, lightweight and convenient to use for those on the move. Only slightly larger and about the thickness of two of those standard plastic CD cases, the burner is very transportable and easy to use as it can be hot plugged into a computer through the convenience of the built in USB port and in most cases does not need an external power supply. (An external AC adapter is provided with the DVD burner in the event it is ever required). The DVD drive is cross platform, works with Windows computers and Macs. No drivers are required to use the DVD player/burner on any of the recent Macintosh computers.
A USB cable with DUAL connection is supplied with the drive for daisy chaining as the back of the drive is engineered with only one female USB receptacle.
The Startech is fast, reliable and boasts a 24 hour online technical support resource and is backed up with a one year manufacturers warranty. The Drive is listed at $149.99 on the startech site, but has been listed on the net as available in prices ranging from $98.00 to $125.00. DVDs and disc technology will one day go the way of the floppy, but with the library of CDs and DVDs that everyone has on hand the Startech infosafe USB drive is a useful tool to have on hand for the foreseeable future.
