Actor Heath Ledger was found dead today in a Soho apartment, located on trendy Broome St. in New York City. The apartment that Ledger had been staying in is rumoured to belong to Mary Kate Olsen.

His body was found by a housekeeper earlier this afternoon. According to reports made by New York City Police, the Brokeback Mountain star died of a drug overdose. The housekeeper discovered the 28-year-old’s body amidst a collection of unmarked sleeping pills that had been strewn about the room.

After finding Ledger, the housekeeper called for a masseuse who happened to be in the building, and after the two unsuccessfully attempted to wake Ledger, they immediately called the paramedics.

By 3:35 p.m. he was officially pronounced dead.

Officials are unclear as to whether or not Ledger’s death was accidental or intentional.

Ledger, who most recently played the role of the Joker in the upcoming Batman film, split with his long-time girlfriend Michelle Williams nearly a year ago. Ledger and Williams have one daughter, Matilda.
