‘Bucket List’ Rules Weekend Box Office
Two adventurous septuagenarians beat out treasure hunters and hapless small-time crooks to take the No. 1 spot at this weekend’s box office.
“The Bucket List,” which stars 70-year-old actors Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman as cancer patients who take it upon themselves to see the world before they die, brought in $19.5 million at more than 2,900 theatres, according to studio estimates Sunday.
The movie first opened in limited release on Dec. 25.
Coming in a close second was “First Sunday” with Ice Cube and Tracy Morgan, which took in $19 million at 2,200 theaters.
In the comedy, Cube and Morgan’s characters try to rob a church — but the scheme doesn’t quite end up the way they planned.
Pregnant teen comedy “Juno” came in third. It has banked $71.2 million so far, putting it on pace to best “Sideways” at $71.5 million and become Fox Searchlight’s biggest hit ever.
The No. 1 movie for the past three weeks, Nicholas Cage’s “National Treasure: Book of Secrets,” dropped to fourth place with $11.5 million at 3,400 theatres.
“There Will Be Blood,” starring Daniel Day-Lewis as a greedy oil prospector, turned in an impressive performance in limited release, taking in nearly $2 million at 129 theaters to average $15,000 per theatre.
