Radiohead Fans Are Cheap
It appears that Radiohead put a little too much faith in their fans. After thrilling their online community with the news that their latest album “In Rainbows” would be available for download at whatever price the buyer chose to pay, Radiohead is disappointed to see that the price wasn’t right, after all.
According to MTV News, there were more than 1 million copies downloaded off the band’s official website. Unfortunately, however, only a reported 40 percent of the copies were paid for. Out of the collection of fans that did decide to pony up the cash for the album, 17 per cent paid less than $4.00 for the band’s highly anticipated album.
Although the band and their label refused to comment on the reports tracked by comScore Data, the company that tracked the sales and traffic on the In Rainbows website, it can be certain that the debacle has definitely gained them some press. Being the first mainstream band to venture down this marketing path, Radiohead will forever be honoured as the pioneers of what may likely be the future of music.
