Megan McCauley: A No-Holds-Barred Kind Of Singer

Posted by Eva Lam on October 27th, 2007

A friend of Megan McCauley once told her she was “a gothic punk with a side-stitch of freak all wrapped up in a fashionista package.”

Not a conventional description – but then again, McCauley is not a conventional girl.

The 19-year-old singer from Cleveland, Ohio has already been featured on two movie soundtracks. She contributed “Wonder” to the “Electra” soundtrack, and her songs “Die For You” and “Reverie” appeared on the soundtrack to “Fantastic Four.”

Following a self-titled EP in 2005 and an appearance this month on “Dr. Phil,” McCauley is back with a full-length solo effort. “Better Than Blood” was officially released Oct. 23 and contains three new songs along with eight older songs previously released on the EP, soundtracks and iTunes.

The musicians McCauley lists as her influences range from classic acts such as Janis Joplin and Bob Dylan, to newer artists Poe and Damien Rice. She credits Melora Creager, frontwoman of all-cello band Rasputina, for inspiring her to learn how to play instruments.

For songwriting, McCauley doesn’t need to look any further than her own life. A self-described “outsider” at school, McCauley says her tumultuous upbringing has left her with a strong sense of who she is – and without the need to justify herself to anyone.

She holds nothing back when she draws on personal experience for her music. A song on her new album, “I’ll Pay You To Shoot Him,” recalls an incident when the fourteen-year-old McCauley witnessed a domestic dispute between her parents that turned violent. Filled with anger, the young teen turned to the responding officers and yelled, “I’ll pay you to shoot him!”

“I am an open book when it comes to emotional things,” McCauley says in her site bio. “The fact that most of my life early on was shielded and sheltered by suburbia, I made sure that I found out everything myself. I’ve gone through things, so why hide it? People are going to find out anyway. Why not have people learn from that?”

“The thing is, I have no personal space to be invaded. I’m going to be as blunt and to the point as I possibly can.”
