Michael Buckley is the man behind the hottest comedy channel on YouTube. But earlier this year, after several unintentional YouTube infractions, his Peron75 account was suspended.
“I quickly shot a video in that moment to communicate that I’m still here. I was crying. I was in my bed lying there thinking what am I going to do? I probably had 10,000 subscribers and 100 videos with lots of hits,” he said. “I kept telling people to go to the site and it wasn’t going to be there anymore. It was so traumatic.”
The suspension was because of American Idol. “It was totally bogus because they had done a charity show called Idol Gives Back and any videos that had the search tags ‘Idol Gives Back’ were pulled.” Luckily, a few days later, the claim was released and his account popped back up.
Several times a week Michael produces a biting snap-shot of celebrity news and rumours that interest him – from Britney’s latest fiasco to why The View needs a new set.
“I’m definitely playing an extreme version of myself. I am very energetic and very gay but I definitely turn it up to be somewhat more entertaining,” he said. “Also I don’t want to have a 10-minute video, so I talk really fast to get it all in.”
Michael’s off-the-wall What The Buck personality is balanced by his more personal Peron75 video blogs. The latter was his first YouTube channel and it was started so he could rate and comment on videos. But after watching many other YouTubers perform in front of the camera, Michael decided to start the What The Buck show.
But it hasn’t come without its challenges.
He was banned a second time because of So You Think You Can Dance.
“They had pulled videos of people who had used footage from the show. I wrote them a heart-felt letter saying I had done a review saying what a must-watch summer show this is. I guess they were mad I used their logo, which I will never do again. Hundreds of people wrote to them saying please lift the claim and they did.”
The upside to the trauma was the creation of his WhatTheBuckShow channel which, over summer and early fall, has become one of YouTube’s hottest comedy channels. This rise has even stirred a bit of jealousy among the YouTube ranks as a rise in popularity today is far more difficult than it was in say, early 2006.
“When I started the show I wanted to do like a little Weekend Update story and then a quick joke. I realized that it was turning into entire episodes about America’s Next Top Model and that wasn’t my intention.”
While Michael hasn’t heard from big time celebrities he’s mocked, he’s “heard from the reality people because they weren’t expecting to be picked on the way that Britney and Beyonce are used to. I hear from girls who were on Top Model or other reality shows.” At first they called Michael a jerk, but now they enjoy the attention.
He finds it amazing that once you’ve achieved a modest amount of popularity, people perceive you very differently. Many popular YouTube personalities who wouldn’t give Buck the time of day before, suddenly want his show to mention them.
“I’m like, remember when I had 5,000 subs and I would email you to check out my videos and you never wrote back to me? Now you want me to talk to you? That’s also been my tactic change in terms of not being bitchy because I used to go on people’s videos and leave bitchy comments because that’s the nature of YouTube I think and now I never do that. I leave five stars for everybody and I respect everybody’s work because I know how much work goes into it.”
His production consists of one person holding cue cards and another in the booth switching photos and doing graphics. “It’s me spending hours writing the script, getting the pictures, it’s so much work. I’d love some assistants!”
So far his online success has led to guest appearances and a recurring segment with Fox News. “The people who say you’re a sellout – it’s like, I’m never going to make back these last two years spending all these hours not making a dime. If I can make some money, be happy for me. If you tell someone who’s successful that they’re a sellout, I’d love to be a sellout – I wish someone would pay me! I’m optimistic for everybody. LisaNova was on MADtv – good for her. I’m happy for anybody who gets any success out of this.”
Michael sees YouTube growing, especially with respect to the partnership program, and that more companies will latch on in the future. He isn’t supportive of how companies such as Universal Music and NBC are listed among non-corporate YouTube channels. “They should be on there as sponsors or a different company category. They aren’t user generated so when I passed NBC (in the rankings) I was pretty happy about that – I was like screw you NBC!”
He believes he can make a career out of being online. “A lot of agents and producers are widening up to the whole Internet thing but they don’t know what to do. I had 500,000 hits last week – that’s more than some Bravo shows so there is definitely something there.”
Michael’s YouTube success strategy includes playing nice by going to other people’s videos and leaving comments. He also believes that you can’t just create and upload a video and think people will see what you’ve done.
“You have to become a part of the community, which I didn’t realize until I got suspended and relied on the help of others. Reach out, subscribe and become loyal viewers of others and they will become loyal viewers of yours.”
He also advises not to refer to viewers as fans. “The moment you start talking about having fans, you sound like an asshole. I won’t say I’m a YouTube celebrity. I’m a YouTube personality. Back in the day, well a couple months ago, I changed it from Fan Mail to Email. Watching other YouTubers talking about their fans is so obnoxious!”
Michael categorizes his audience as very broad and a real mixed bag “from middle aged women home during the day to the gay community. It’s all over!”
“I get emails from straight guys in the middle of the country saying I don’t like gay people but I really like your show. Then I get heart-felt two page emails saying I’ve never seen a gay person before, but I really like your show, really like that you talk about your husband and I’ve completely changed my opinion about gay people. I print them out, put them in my bag and whenever I get discouraged about things I take them out and say, oh yeah, it’s worth it.”
For Michael Buckley, there will surely be many more subscribers, YouTube accolades, and letters to come.
