Tragedy struck on Tuesday, Sept. 25, at a Smashing Pumpkins concert in Richmond B.C. A 20-year-old man collapsed to the ground after a vigorous bout of crowd surfing. According to a provincial coroner?s report, there was no trauma to the head and the cause of death will only be determined after a full autopsy and toxicology scan.

The man’s limp body was dragged out of a crowd of nearly 3800 people by a few nearby Pumpkins fans. The show was held at the Pacific National Exhibition forum and was packed wall to wall with hundreds of screaming people. There were reportedly a number of mosh pits throughout the venue where fans were thrashing about to the music, a typical rock concert practice.

“They called first aid right away. They tried to resuscitate him … they were unsuccessful,” Police Const. Howard Chow told the CBC of the men who retrieved the body from the centre of the action.

The band has not commented on the incident, and the name of the deceased male has yet to be released to the media.
