In a special “We Will Rock You” themed episode of Canadian Idol, the seven remaining contestants belted out the tunes of legendary rock band Queen.

Not only did the Idols get to sing the band’s music, they also got to perform for Queen guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor when the pair came to Toronto last week.

After performing for May and Taylor, the Idols attended a performance of Toronto’s production of “We Will Rock You,” where they signed autographs and greeted fans.

May and Taylor surprised the theatre crowd at the end of the show when they joined the cast of the show to perform “Bohemian Rhapsody,” before May addressed the crowd about the Idols.

“I’ve got to say we spent a whole day with them more or less today, just giving to them what we could and I was very surprised. Roger and I were both surprised.

“I actually have to tell you I have a different feeling about the Idol thing after this, because I got a feeling that it was a caring organization and perhaps things are evolving more towards the singer/songwriters and the really talented people who really should be on TV. So God bless ‘em I say,” May told the crowd, before Taylor and May pulled out one more surprise for the crowd – the cast of “We Will Rock You” and the seven “Canadian Idols” sang “The Show Must Go On,” with May and Taylor performing.

Queen fans who hung around outside the Canon Theatre in Toronto were rewarded when both Taylor and May stopped on their way out of the theatre to sign autographs for fans.

Before this week’s Canadian Idol episode began, host Ben Mulroney asked judge Sass Jordan what she thinks it means that the first three contestants sent home were women.

“I don’t think it’s a gender issue, I think it’s Canada’s interpretation of who is the best Idol,” Jordan replied.

As for judge Zack Werner’s pre-show thoughts?

“These kids better rock tonight or somebody – hey somebody’s going home no matter what, how cool is that?” Werner said.

Brian Melo kicked the show off.

“I was hugely impressed, I think he sings from the heart,” May said of Brian Melo, who sang “Too Much Love Will Kill You.”

“Brian, wow. You know, you saw Brian May, your namesake, what he was saying – completely moved by it, and I agree with him,” Jake Gold told him.

“Personally, pitch-wise I thought it was sketchy all over the place,” Werner told him.

Greg Neufeld took “We Are the Champions,” and reworked it to make it his own.

“What you just did is the definition of a singer. And you got one word wrong, it’s not ‘we’ are the champions, it’s ‘I’, you are the champion, Greg,” Jordan told Neufeld.

Werner again gave a negative review, which set off Gold.

“I gotta tell you Zack, I’ve kind of left you alone this season, but tonight you’re real off base…I don’t believe what you’re saying,” Gold snapped to Werner, before giving praise to Neufeld.

“Wow. I’m almost speechless. I was so impressed by that performance,” Jordan told Carly Rae after her rendition of “Killer Queen.”

“You understand how to entertain,” Farley Flex told her.

“I think you did damn well,” May said told Matt Rapley after his rehearsal of “Under Pressure.

“I like the fact that you took it back to where you were a couple of weeks ago,” Flex told Rapley.

“I think you did a fantastic job of an extremely difficult song,” Jordan told him.

“It’s five for five so far,” Jordan said after Dwight D’eon’s performance of “Tie Your Mother Down.”

“You’re back to being a contender,” Werner told him.

Tara Oram performed “Headlong,” for which she received praise from May and Taylor for her performance.

“That was pretty perfect, it suits your voice,” Taylor told her, while May gave her advice about breathing throughout the song.

“It’s my song, and that’s the way it should be sung,” May told the camera after Oram’s performance.

“Tara, that was one of your best performances bar none,” Flex told her.

“I think you are a born performer,” Jordan said.

Jaydee Bixby sang “I Want to Break Free,” which had May advise him to sing with more angst.

“(You have) quite unique timing, phrasing, it’s not exactly the same as our version,” Taylor told him.

For the most part, the judges were positive.

“I don’t know really what to say Jaydee, except I found that oddly appealing,” Werner told him.

“I felt that for s song that’s I want to break free, while you sang it well, you didn’t really get the message across, because you were smiling through the whole thing. It’s a pain song, Brian May told you that and you didn’t listen,” Gold said.

Overall, the Idols performed better than expected, but based on performance, either Dwight or Jaydee should head home this week; the other Idols brought more than they did to the table.
