Idols Go Unplugged
It was unplugged night on Canadian Idol, with special guest mentor Enrique Iglesias.
The Idols were not lost on the star in their midst.
“You ca tell you’re nervous, a little bit,” Iglesias told Martha Joy during her rehearsal of “True Colors.”
“Yeah, I’m singing to Enrique Iglesias!” Martha Joy replied.
Martha Joy got mixed reviews from the judges, including being told by Zach Werner that there was an absolutely “horrible” note in the middle of the song.
It wasn’t just Martha Joy who got mixed, or plain out negative reviews from the judges, all of the Idol wannabes seemed not to be able to step up to the plate.
“I had this vision of you one day winning this show, and that vision is slowly fading away,” Werner told Dwight Deon.
Country crooner Jaydee Bixby turned “Time of Your Life” by Green Day into a country, twangy mess – complete with a violin and accordion.
The audience seemed to love it, Sass Jordan was the only judge who agreed.
“It was cool because it was exactly what you do.”
“I thought that was awful,” Werner said.
“My problem with that Jaydee is (that) I didn’t feel that was an honest performance,” Jake Gold told him, with Farley Flex backing him up.
“That just exposed so many flaws that I don’t think you have.”
Hamilton’s Brian Melo was the fifth performer and the first one to turn around the judges opinions.
“First one tonight who actually knew what it meant to be intense when you’re unplugged,” Gold told him.
“That was the first performance of the night I was glad I didn’t have earplugs,” Jordan told him.
Brian even won over Werner.
“That was killer man.”
Even last week’s top performer, Matt Rapley did not perform his song of “Ain’t no Sunshine” as well as the judges were expecting him to.
“It’s not there may be no sunshine, there ain’t no sunshine,” Flex explained.
“Step up, man! Step up!” Werner exclaimed.
Carly Rae was the second Idol wannabe to receive rave reviews from the judges.
“(I) finally got the goosebumps I was looking for,” Gold told her.
Hands down, the best performance of the night was the final performance – Greg Neufeld singing “I’m Ready” by Bryan Adams.
After telling him no one else was in his league, Werner rushed the stage to give him a hug – reminiscent of Werner giving last year’s runner-up a hug during the final performance show of last season.
The only odd part of the night was Ben Mulroney’s right thumb, which seemed to have some kind of bandage on it – that switched colours from white to black and was bigger than his microphone.
Neufeld has become my pick to win, going home this week may be a toss up between my pick from last week – Dwight and Martha Joy.
