This Is Why MIMS Is Hot – The Rapper Talks to andPOP

Posted by andPOP Staff on April 27th, 2007

New York rapper MIMS says ever since he was a boy, he knew he was hot.

“I’m a confident person. Being hot is believing in yourself,” MIMS told andPOP on a recent visit to Toronto. “People tend to confuse it with a monetary situation. It doesn’t always have to be ‘I got a million cars’ or ‘ I know a million girls’ but for me it’s about being a persistent person and proud of my music.”

And MIMS seems to have a lot to be proud of.

His breakout song, “This Is Why I’m Hot,” off of his debut album with Capitol Records, Music Is My Saviour (an acronym for his cipher and literal last name, Mims), is permeating radio airwaves. The track and its reggae remix featuring Junior Reid and Baby Cham immediately became a club anthem, and the single has been No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot 100, Hot Digital Songs and Hot Rap Tracks charts. Even the ring tone for “This Is Why I’m Hot” has put up big numbers, become the fast-selling platinum ring tone in history.

Despite all of the fanfare, the Washington Heights, New York, native is trying to stay humble.

The rapper born Shawn Mims said his simple and rough childhood fuelled his interest in music. His estranged father died when he was only 11 years old and his mother died in childbirth soon after his 13th birthday. But, before she passed away, she bought him DJ turntables. MIMS says his tumultuous past was a muse for his music, and that gift helped him carry on.

“My mother was a single parent. She didn’t have much to give me when she passed, so it meant a lot,” MIMS remembers. “Me and my brother and sister essentially became an orphans. I used [the turntables] to channel my emotions, instead of turning it into a negative lifestyle. Music was there for me at a young age and that’s what allowed me to stay on the right path.”

So, at 13, MIMS picked up DJing as a hobby, playing sets after school and for weekend house parties at friends’ houses. MIMS says music was a pastime for him until he started getting into the engineering side. Using digital production equipment and experimenting with lyrics fuelled his interest.

He also says that being an executive producer on his album, and working with Miami co-producers The Blackout Movement (comprised of DJ Blackout and Tommy Muzikil aka Tommy Gunz, who also worked with him on independent hit “I Did You Wrong” in 2003) helped him polish the production on his new album.

“(DJing) allowed me to really construct music from scratch, from the ground up and that’s how I really got into it,” MIMS says. “Production was the most important part of the album for me, as well as lyrics – it had to be a complete package.”

MIMS believes it’s this polished package that’s bringing the heat and while some critics believe MIMS is simply cocky, the rapper thinks he’s hot because people also identify with his music.

“Sometimes we learn from negative things faster than we learn from positive things. I’m happy that I was put through a lot of pressure because I was able to know what the real world is about. I learned to take tragedy and turn it into something that’s positive.

“They’re not going to listen to the guy who lives in Beverly Hills and has a million dollars in his back account. I grew up in the ghetto and survived that.”

MIMS has successfully trekked through the Canadian hip-hop sector as well, which to some, is the pickiest of crowds. But before MIMS was all over North American airwaves with “This Is Why I’m Hot,” he worked with Canada’s very own Baby Blue Soundcrew and was featured on their song, “Love ‘Em All,” with Choclair. He says they allowed him to get love outside of America.

“That was like my first experience really with the industry. It helped me a lot,” he says. “I think Canadian hip-hop is actually some of the most diverse in the industry. Sometimes New York tends to look at things from a one-sided view and break music down into territories. I just want to make good music. I’m trying to change that.”

MIMS says that is the main reason why so many upstart artists are featured on his LP; he’s trying to give them a chance to grow.

“It’s important to give a chance to other artists who may not be able to shine amongst the others in the industry. The scene is so competitive and I want them to grow just like other people gave me a chance to grow.”

With the popularity of his breakout track and album, many other rappers would see how far they could take their success, maybe with a clothing line or movie deal, but MIMS is taking it easy when it comes to spreading his good fortune.

“I feel very lucky right now, I just want to stay focused. I’m concentrating on my music right now and doing well. When I say success I don’t really mean financially. You gotta crawl before you walk.”
