Taylor Swift writes hit songs.

One day in class, not exactly following her teacher’s every word, Swift started writing lyrics to a song that would become “Tim McGraw.”

The song became the first single off her debut, self-titled album, which has gone gold since its release late last year.

Swift, the 17-year-old country singer, spoke with andPOP recently, just before her big win at the CMT Awards for Breakthrough Video of the Year.
