A Cooler Fat Albert? Shawn Wayans Discusses Latest Project

Posted by andPOP Staff on April 6th, 2007

It’s hard to believe but a Wayans brothers-scripted project does not consist of any black men dressing up as white women or adults dressing up as babies.

The latest Wayans creation – a cartoon called Thugaboo – is unlike any of their past projects. This one has life lessons aimed at children and the press is, for a change, kind.

“Thugaboo: Sneaker Madness,” the first special which aired last year on Nickelodeon, will stream from April 7 until April 14 for free at thugaboo.com.

Shawn Wayans, 36, produced and directed the special and recently spoke with andPOP to talk about its creation, purpose and future.

andPOP: Where did the idea for Thugaboo come from?

Shawn Wayans: Me and my brothers are all parents now. Often we look at TV together with our kids and we realized that although there are entertaining shows on, they don’t have the shows like the ones that we grew up on, the stuff with the same kind of ingredients in there. We grew up on Fat Albert and Charlie Brown, and they were fun shows but they taught us life lessons that were very valuable to us and useful as we hit different stages in our lives. And we wanted to do something like that for this generation of kids so we thought of something along those lines but hipper and cooler.

andPOP: So how did you get the ball rolling?

SW: I’m a big cartoon fan so me and Marlon mentioned it to Keenan and he thought it was a great idea so we sat around and collaborated and put it together.

andPOP: You sound very passionate about this project in particular.

SW: It’s an important show for this generation. It is a show that is not only cool, hip and fun, but it’s going back to the old school where it taught kids something at the end of the show. There aren’t many shows on TV especially for this demographic that will teach you anything. Every episode has a different life lesson so we’ll go through the list of what we want to teach kids and it’s basically trying to instill some moral values and some choices so when they hit obstacles, they can recall something that they possibly got from our episodes.

andPOP: What made Fat Albert work was that it taught lessons but it was also cool to watch. Kids would watch it at five years of age and it was still socially acceptable to watch it at 10.

SW: We took it up a notch from Fat Albert. Fat Albert was cool and we loved it but Thugaboo is even cooler because it’s very contemporary with that old school feel to it. It’s set on the streets of New York City and it’s a very diverse group of kids and it has a hop-hop flavour to it.

andPOP: So what are the future plans for Thugaboo?

SW: We plan to do a comic strip with it and continue to do specials and keep it special. We’re not rushing to do a series out of it. I like the excitement of kids wanting to see it again later on in the year and to have something to look forward to like what we had with Charlie Brown.

andPOP: Arie Spears does one of the voices. Wouldn’t it have been cheaper to just have him do all the voices?

SW: It probably would have but then you’re giving him all the power. You have to keep the power balanced.

andPOP: It teaches lessons and that’s a big difference between some of the films you make (White Chicks, Little Man), and this, and that’s no knock on the films you make. A lot of films aren’t meant to teach you something; they’re meant to strictly entertain.

SW: That’s why Thugaboo is on Wayans Family. So anything Wayans Brothers is our crazy comedies but Wayans Family is like how Disney has Touchstone for their edgy movies and then they have plain old Disney for more family, middle of the road films.

andPOP: Is it tough though when you release movies like Little Man and White Chicks, and they get beat up by the critics? They make a lot of money, but they don’t get good press.

SW: Honestly, and it’s not a knock on any critics, we don’t really have that in mind when we do our work. We do our stuff for the audience. It’s a great thing that they did like [Thugaboo] but the way we approach our work is that we do it for the fans.

andPOP: Do you have to come to a sense of acceptance, knowing that you know your audience likes the films but the critics won’t?

SW: At the end of the day, it’s about the money. If they make money, we make movies. It doesn’t matter what the critics say. Everyone’s not going to like what you do but the fans tell you if you did a good job or not and the fans go to our films and they love what we do and that’s why we continue to do what we do.

andPOP: And you’re also touring and doing standup comedy again. What can people expect when they see you perform onstage?

SW: Standup is my first love. That’s how I started in the business. Often in the middle of us doing films, I’d always go back to doing it. It keeps me sharp, keeps me funny, keeps me in touch with what’s going on. They can expect the type of stuff they see us do in the movies but on stage.
