Improv has a long and proud history at Canadian universities. I should know. I was there when a friend of mine, inspired by my theatre society, founded Ryerson’s first improv society three years ago.
University of Toronto student Aaron Hagey-Mackay wasn’t thinking of Ryerson when he helped found the U of T’s improv scene (he was inspired by McGill), but it came from the same scrappy ambitions.
“We’ve been wanting to have people come together for improv for awhile,” he says. “Last year it was just getting people from U of T together to do improv. We do it every Tuesday night.”
After putting together a solid improv team through their efforts at U of T’s Hart House, Hagey-Mackay and his partner in crime, Simon Pond, decided to put together an improv competition this year. Teams from the University of Guelph, York, Humber, McGill, Ryerson, Carleton, and Queens descended on Hart House for a three-night, Olympic-style tournament.
On Jan. 19, the Toronto, Guelph, York, and Humber teams competed (Humber won) while on Jan. 20, the McGill, Ryerson, Carleton, and Queens teams competed (Carleton won). On Sunday, the top two teams from both nights competed (Humber won).
“This is the first time we’re doing it,” says Hagey-Mackay. “We’re still working out the kinks in the operation. It’s definitely a learning experience, but so far it’s been a pleasure.”
Abigail Bimman is the Carleton Improv Association captain, and has been doing it since high school. She’s noticeably pleased after her team’s win on Jan. 20.
“I think that we’re very good at coming up with some really witty lines,” she says, “and building off each other. Our team’s very good at playing with each other rather than against each other, and that’s very important.”
Laura Thornton and David Underwood are also members of the Carleton Improv Association. Asked what they like best about it, Underwood replies, “It’s a great way to have fun and enjoy time with people that you like and get on well together with,” before trailing off. Thornton supplies him with, “There are no words.”
