Opening for Billy Talent on a 13-date Canadian tour, Brampton, Ontario-based band Moneen has rented an RV for the first time. But there is one problem.
“Man, we’re running around with an RV full of frozen piss,” lead vocalist and guitarist Kenny Bridges explained to andPOP last week, en route to Lethbridge, Alberta. “How the hell are we ever going to get it out of there?”
The four members of Moneen decided that since they’d be driving across Canada, they should splurge for the RV for a little more comfort. They have to pour antifreeze down the toilet to prevent freezing, but it’s not quite working out.
They drove 60 hours straight to Victoria from Toronto for the start of the tour on Jan. 18. Along the way, they tried to find a “sani dump,” as it’s called in the RV world to, well, dump their sani, but most places were closed.
They finally found an available sani dump but it was covered in four inches of ice.
“So I got a shovel and started smashing it to pieces and finally we got to the sani dump hole and got everything hooked up,” Bridges said. “I pulled the lever down and nothing came out. So I guess that even though we’re pouring antifreeze down there, it’s still frozen.”
Hopefully, by the time they make it to their show at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto on Friday, they will have perfected the washroom situation.
Luckily for Moneen, it’s not a problem that they’ll have to deal with once the tour ends.
In mid-February, they’ll be headed to a country where not many North American bands frequent, Mexico, and Bridges is pumped up for their two concerts.
“Just the fact that we’re going to friggin’ Mexico and that we’re going to be kidnapped and killed!” he joked, sort of. “The other guys are (worried) but I don’t think we have to worry about it. We’re going completely out of our element so we don’t know what it’s going to be like at all. We don’t know any bands that have toured Mexico.”
Bridges said that some people from Mexico have flown out to see them perform in Texas and California, so they decided to find out how big their following is south of the U.S. border.
“We have a friend who lives in Mexico and he said he saw these bootleg fake Moneen shirts all the time that kids just make,” Bridges said.
After that, Moneen will continue touring, headlining a U.S. jaunt in March, before returning to Canada and then playing in Europe. On all of their dates, they are supporting their latest release, “The Red Tree.” Their latest single, “Don’t Ever Tell Locke What He Can’t Do,” is in reference to a line said on the hit television series “Lost.”
“I have a countdown on my computer that tells me when the new episodes are going to start,” Bridges said, adding that he is frustrated that he had to wait about three months for the show to resume. “Stupid fall season.”
And while Bridges waits for the new “Lost” episodes, he is performing at Canadian arenas before their friends in Billy Talent take the stage.
He considers Moneen to be an “under the radar” kind of band (which is why he was pleasantly surprised when Alternative Press named “The Red Tree” one of their “10 essential albums of 2006″) but if his band blows up in 2007, he hopes they will be as humble as the Billy Talent gentlemen.
“It’s really cool to see that whether they play in a big arena or in a small club, they’d step off the stage and be the same people and I think that’s the way we would be. So it’s good to see a band that started just like us that has blown up as grounded as they are. Bands don’t have to blow up and become complete assholes.”
