Northern Ontario Natives Look to Leonardo Di Caprio For Help
A Native group in Northern Ontario is looking to enlist Leonardo Di Caprio to help them in their fight against diamond mining in the boreal forest.
CBC.ca reports that the Nishnawbe Aski Nation, which is an organization that represents about 45,000 Cree and Ojibwa people in 49 communities, has written to Di Caprio, asking for his help.
Di Cpario is a very vocal environmentalist. He has gone on “Oprah’s” show to talk about it. As well, his latest film is “Blood Diamond” – a film which features the diamond trade industry in Syria.
The letter tells Di Caprio that the mining in Northern Ontario could threaten the boreal forest, as well as aboriginal ancestral lands.
According to Alvin Fiddler, deputy grand chief of the Nishnawbe Aski Nation, the letter asks Di Caprio to help publicize their fight. He says that the film star has not yet responded.
