Auditioners will be allowed to bring their own instruments into their auditions for the fifth season of “Canadian Idol,” CTV announced yesterday.

The auditions begin at the end of next month in BC and conclude in April in Toronto.

The dates and cities where auditions will be taking place are: Vancouver, BC on Jan. 27 and 28; Calgary, AB on Feb. 10 and 11; Saskatoon, SK on Feb. 17 and 18; Winnipeg, MB on Feb. 24 and 25; London, ON on March 3 and 4; Montreal, QC on March 10 and 11; Ottawa-Gatineau on March 17 and 18; Halifax, NS on March 24 and 25; St. John’s, NFLD on Apr. 4 and Toronto, ON on Apr. 12/13.

“We are very excited about musicians being able to accompany themselves in the auditions. Canadian Idol remains a vocal competition, but we’re hoping this new element brings out people who may have never considered auditioning before,” said John Brunton, executive producer of the show.

Auditioners will be judged the same whether they bring an instrument or not into the audition, however if they choose to bring an instrument in, they will be judged on their ability to play that instrument as well.

Season five is set to debut on CTV in June.
