Watching “The Devil Wears Prada” (out on DVD this week) is like reliving your first horrid boss over again.
We’ve all had them: demanding, unapologetic, tyrants who make us work beyond compare; the ones who send us home in tears, make us swear we’ll quit, despite the fact that we come back once again.
Adapted from the best selling book of the same name, “The Devil Wears Prada” stars Anne Hathaway as Andy Sachs, a plain-Jane who gets a job at the high-end fashion magazine Runway as the second assistant to Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep). Priestly is demanding and mean, and seemingly unapologetic for it, but she isn’t Andy’s only problem at work. The first assistant, Emily (Emily Blunt) is just as cold and mean to Andy, despite having been where she is before. However, Andy finds a friend in Nigel (Stanley Tucci), who helps her along and gives her the clothes she needs to be taken seriously in her job.
The film stands on its own away from the book it came from. Miranda is not as mean in the film as she is in the book, which can be disappointing, but it is nice to see that the woman is human after all. As mentioned when the film was released in theatres, Streep deserves another Oscar nomination for her turn as the Queen of Mean.
Hathaway does well in the roll, however some of the best scenes of Andy ended up on the cutting room floor (when she gets in a company car for the first time to go to Calvin Klein, when she seemingly gives up hunting for the Harry Potter books and gives away coffees on the street). But thankfully, with the DVD, both of these scenes and many more are available to view. Other extras include featurettes, an extra with Patricia Field (the costume designer), gag reels, as well as commentaries and commercials and trailers for the film.
Tucci is once again fabulous. His Nigel differs from the one in the book, but we get to see more of him in the film, which because of the way Tucci plays it is a blessing. Blunt is a welcome addition to the film, she is a fabulous actress and can get across a point with just a look. Blunt is also able to deliver the one liners that make the film so funny.
One note of caution for anyone who has read the book: the film does differ in many ways from it. The film takes away a lot of the subplots that the original had, but also doesn’t introduce the audience too much to Andy’s friends or boyfriend, so when she begins to alienate them and her relationships suffer because of it, it’s hard to really care. But, if you are willing to appreciate the film and the book as separate pieces of the story, you will enjoy the film.
You don’t have to appreciate fashion to appreciate Prada, and you don’t have to have tried to make a start for yourself in New York City to appreciate Andy’s heartache and hard knocks as she tries to get her life started.
“The Devil Wears Prada” may have been billed as a chick flick when it was released in June, but it is really for anyone – male or female – who have had the boss from hell.
