Interview: Rex Goudie Wants People to ‘Look Closer’

Posted by andPOP Staff on December 8th, 2006

It produced the nickname “Sexy Rexy” and thrust him into the music business spotlight, but being only known for his part on Canadian Idol is an attribute Rex Goudie hopes to put behind him.

Not that the 21-year-old from Burlington, Newfoundland, has minded all of the attention that came with placing second on the show last season – not to mention meeting girlfriend (and the show’s winner) Melissa O’Neil – but his new album, “Look Closer,” is more about him than his journey on reality television.

That decision to focus on his life helped him as a songwriter. Goudie says he can usually write a song pretty quickly if it is about his own experiences or something else he wants to explore. However, he says it is more difficult to write about someone else’s experiences, but hopes that aspect of songwriting becomes easier with practise.

“I wrote a lot of songs for the album, but there were six of them that made it on the album. I’m pretty proud of that,” he says over the phone, just after the final touches had been put on the disc. “Look Closer” will be released on Tuesday (Dec. 12), almost a year to the day after his first release, “Under the Lights” (Dec. 13, 2005).

The first single to hit radio airwaves is “You Got to Me” which was written by Chantal Kreviazuk and her husband, Our Lady peace frontman Raine Maida. Goudie says when he was given the demo of the song, the pace was slower, with Chantal singing accompanied only by a piano.

“(We chose ‘You Got to Me’) for the first single because we had a lot of stuff written but nothing was really ready to go to radio,” he says, adding that he made the song his own by quickening the pace and making it more of a rock track.

When asked about his favourite song on the album, Goudie is silent for a moment, and then says it changes all the time. But if he had to pick one, it would be “Ain’t Dead Yet,” a song he wrote about home.

“It’s basically written about my hometown, and while (some) people move away from home and don’t call Newfoundland home anymore, the main lyric in the song is ‘The place will be my home until I die, and I ain’t dead yet.’ I really liked writing that song.”

Which brings up the topic of home, which for Goudie is now Toronto. Toronto can be a big city for a boy from the Rock. Does he miss home?

“Every time I see something on the news about home I watch it, and I’m on the phone all the time with my buddies,” he says. “It gets a bit taxing, but thank God for Christmas and other holidays where I get a chance to go home and enjoy myself.”

Goudie placing second on Idol was the best he could do at the time, so he doesn’t regret anything.

“The truth of it is, (it’s) even the same with touring now and the same with making music. All you can is go do the best you can that day,” Goudie says. “And if the best you can do that day is the best of the night, then you’re going to get through it. The same thing with touring and making albums, if the best you can do at that point is good enough to be on the charts, or good enough for people to buy, you’re going to do well.”

Goudie wants all of his fans to check out the new disc, as well as people who may not have enjoyed the first album because of its “Idol influence.”

“This is somewhere definitely where I want to be as an artist, and kind of hints toward the direction I’ll go in my career, sort of be like where I want to continue on. I’m hoping that people enjoy it, because it is a very truthful record. There’s a lot of what I wanted to do for the last year or so, since I got into the music industry.”

“Look Closer” is in stores on Dec. 12, and Goudie hopes to be back on the road as soon as possible.
