Online fraud has hit Oprah fans like crazy.

ABC News reports that Illinois police are warning people to be wary of an online invitation to be a part of an Oprah audience where thousands of dollars in free gifts will be given away.

“This scam takes advantage of Oprah’s worldwide base of fans, and the e-mail looks surprisingly authentic,” said Cara Smith, a spokeswoman for the attorney general of Illinois.

It was determined it was a scam because if you wanted to participate in the show, you had to buy a ticket. Prices ranged from $550-$950. Ticket’s to Oprah’s show cost nothing, they are free, even for her giveaway days.

It was staff at Harpo Productions who became aware of the scam and alerted authorities. People who may have bought into the scam are asked to keep an eye on their accounts and to call their local police if they notice any odd occurrences.
