Peter Gabriel has been named a “Man of Peace.” The founder of lengendary British progressive rock band Genesis received the annual award Friday from the Gorbachev Foundation.

Created by former U.S.S.R. president Mikhail Gorbachev, the foundation recognizes democratic values and humanistic principles. Gabriel was noted for his advocacy of human rights and world peace.

The ceremony on Capitoline Hill opened an annual meeting of Nobel Peace Prize laureates in Rome and was attended by Novel winners Lech Walesa and Mairead Corrigan Maguire.

With the award, the 56-year-old rocker (who is still going by the way – Genesis announced its reunion earlier this year) joins the likes of Live 8 mastermind Bob Geldof, Cat Stevens, and actor-director Roberto Benigni who are all fellow recipients.
