Elton John claims organized religions should be banned as it contributes to anti-gay sentiments.

E! Online reports that in an interview to a special gay issue of Music Monthly Magazine, John discussed a range of issues including organized religion’s view on gay issues.

“I think religion has always tried to turn hatred toward gay people. Religion promotes the hatred and spite against gays. But there are so many people I know who are gay and love their religion,” he said.

He also had an opinion on other hot button issues such as the Iraq war, and how religious leaders have failed to step up to the plate regarding international conflicts, such as the war in Iraq.

“Why aren’t they having a conclave? Why aren’t they coming together? I said this after 9-11, and people thought I was nuts. Instead of more violence, why isn’t there a meeting of religious leaders?” John asked.
