Mick Jagger’s sold-out Las Vegas performance with the Rolling Stones on Saturday night was bittersweet, to say the least. The rock star had found out just five hours earlier that his father had died of pneumonia.

The Daily Mail reports that Jagger had quickly left the tour on Friday to be with his father in the UK. Joe Jagger had been hospitalized two weeks earlier after a fall at his home.

But after hearing that his father’s condition was improving, Jagger made the decision to return to the States and perform on Saturday night. Sadly, Joe’s condition declined rapidly and he passed away only hours later. He was 93.

“He returned to the States knowing that his father would have wanted the show to go on, as it were,” said a friend of the singer’s. “It was a terribly difficult thing for Mick to do, he was very upset not to be at his father’s side as he slipped away. Mick will be returning to the UK for a private funeral in the next few days.”

In the past, Jagger has said that his father “taught me how to apply myself and how to distribute my energies best. He worked a lot harder than I do. But I think people did in those days.”
