R&B star Gerald Levert died Friday of a heart attack. The singer, best known as a member of the chart-topping trio Levert, passed away in his hometown of Cleveland. He turned 40 years old in July.

Levert, comprised of Levert’s brother Sean and their friend Marc Gordon, earned their first hit record “(Pop, Pop, Pop, Pop) Goes My Mind” in 1986. Gerald Levert quickly became a heartthrob, attracting throngs of female fans.

The band went on to notch a series of number ones including 1987’s “Casanova” and “Baby I’m Ready” in 1991. That year, Gerald Levert went solo with “Private Line,” the title track of which hit No. 1 on the R&B charts.

Levert recorded eight more solo albums, including 2004’s “Do I Speak for the World?” He is also a noted songwriter and producer, and has worked with Barry White, Stephanie MIlls, and Teddy Pendergrass.
