The father of a Malawian boy currently in the process of being adopted by Madonna is saying that he didn’t intend to give up his child permanently.

Reuters reports that Yohane Banda says the pop singer told him she wanted to raise the child on his behalf, but that adoption was not part of the equation.

“I cannot read and write so I relied on what the (government) officials told me that the papers said Madonna would look after the child the way the orphanage planned to educate him and then he comes back to me,” he explained.

Banda’s latest comments came in stark contrast to words he spoke earlier. Last week, he criticized human rights organizations who have been trying to block the adoption, as they say that Madonna used her celebrity status to bypass Malawi’s strict adoption rules.
