Pop singer and occasional actress Jessica Simpson insists she’s still just a normal girl in charge of her life.

Simpson, who stars in the new comedy Employee of the Month with Dane Cook, talked candidly about taking charge of her life and shooting the new flick during her divorce.

“I’m kind of doing it by doses and, along the way, figuring myself out and learning to belong to myself, learning to be committed to myself,” she says. “I see a lot of change in my life right now. I’m really grasping hold of what I want for the first time.”

Simpson plays a normal old cashier in the film, but found shooting it during her divorce from fellow pop singer Nick Lachey harder than she thought it would be.

“I was going through a really rough time in my life but it was good escapism,” Simpson says. “It was getting out of the world that I was in and getting into a world of being fought over by boys.”

Simpson has also just released the second single from her Public Affair album, “I Belong To Me.”

“It wasn’t even going to be on my album because I was kind of afraid to sing the song,” she says. “It’s a very powerful statement … about owning yourself and controlling yourself. It’s part of evolving, of growing up and becoming a woman.”
