The Rock’s ‘Gridiron Gang’ Tops Weak Box Office
WWF wrestler-turned-serious-actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson topped this past weekend’s box office with his new film, “Gridiron Gang.”
The movie brought in a relatively low $15 million U.S., according to the BBC.
However, it finished well ahead of “The Black Dahlia” and its $10.4 million take. Coming in third was the animated “Everyone’s Hero” — directed by the late Christopher Reeve — with $6.2 million.
“Gridiron Gang” tells the real-life story of a football team launched out of a detention facility for teenagers. Johnson, of course, plays their tough-love coach.
This past weekend was the second in a row that the top 12 films brought in less than the top 12 for the same weekend last year — a total of $62 million this year compared to $70.6 million in 2005.
