The 2006 Emmy Awards are set to take place tonight hosted by Conan O’Brien. Although the votes have already been cast, and the winner’s name is probably already sealed inside of an envelope, it doesn’t mean those winners are the right ones.
So here at andPOP, we thought it would be interesting to look at some of the major nominees, try to guess who will win, compared to who should win. Check back here on Monday to see if our picks were right or not.
And without further adieu, the nominees are:
Drama Series: “Grey’s Anatomy” ABC; “House” Fox; “The Sopranos” HBO; “24″ Fox; “The West Wing” NBC.
WHO SHOULD WIN: It’s a very tough category to pick, however, I think “Grey’s Anatomy” should win it this year. The show has only gotten stronger in its sophomore year. It matches the dramatic content with the comedic content quite well. You’d be hard pressed to find someone who had dry eyes while watching it’s season finale this past May
WHO WILL WIN: Well, with this being the last year of “The West Wing,” it may take it. But I think “Grey’s Anatomy” will still prevail over the sentimental send off for the white house drama.
Comedy Series: “Arrested Development” Fox; “Curb Your Enthusiasm” HBO; “The Office” NBC; “Scrubs” NBC; “Two and a Half Men” CBS.
WHO SHOULD WIN: Personally, I think “Scrubs” deserves the award, however I think it’s a long shot to predict it. Also, “Arrested Development” should win for being such a critical pleaser, and the fact that it was cancelled last season by Fox. But the Academy may not want to give an award to a dead show nobdy watched, even if it gives its fans a little bit of cheer.
WHO WILL WIN: Probably “Curb Your Enthuasiasm,” as it is a critical, and Academy, favourite. “Two and a Half Men” isn’t exactly best comedy series material, “Scrubs,” “The Office” and “Arrested Development” are all just too quirky to win the honour, even if all three of them in their own way deserve it.
Variety, Music or Comedy Series: “The Colbert Report” Comedy Central; “The Daily Show With Jon Stewart” Comedy Central; “Late Night With Conan O’Brien” NBC; “Late Show With David Letterman” CBS; “Real Time With Bill Maher” HBO.
WHO SHOULD WIN: Honestly, as much as I am a Jon Stewart fan, I have to say Bill Mahar, even though I am absolutely certain he won’t take it, as his audience tends to be left wing, and the Academy tends to honour the safer bets (similar to the Oscar snub that Brokeback Mountain saw).
WHO WILL WIN: Stewart. He’s won this award many times over the last few years, and his fan base, and critical kudos, has only strengthened.
Actor, Drama Series: Christopher Meloni, “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” NBC; Denis Leary, “Rescue Me” FX Network; Peter Krause, “Six Feet Under” HBO; Kiefer Sutherland, “24″ Fox; Martin Sheen, “The West Wing” NBC.
WHO SHOULD WIN: Christopher Meloni, from SVU. His character has seen many changes over the years, and this season we saw Meloni at his best. He has taken Detective Stabler from an angry infused cop, back to a human being, with fllaws. His anger no longer defines him, but is a flaw that he is trying to control.
WHO WILL WIN: Both Martin Sheen and Peter Krause have the cancelled series thing going for them. I think Sheen might take this category. Leary would be interesting, but after the controversey the new season of “Rescue Me” has had, I think that the Academy may want to steer clear of that show until things die down.
Actress, Drama Series: Kyra Sedgwick, “The Closer” TNT; Geena Davis, “Commander in Chief” ABC; Mariska Hargitay, “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” NBC; Frances Conroy, “Six Feet Under” HBO; Allison Janney, “The West Wing” NBC.
WHO SHOULD WIN: Hargitay deserves an Emmy. She has won the Golden Globe for her portrayl of Olivia Benson, and it would be nice to see the two lead actors of SVU be recognized, especially since their characters really are a team.
WHO WILL WIN: Another hard pick with three actresses coming from now defunct series, but I think Sedgwick might take it. She’s new, and she brings a fresh feel to “The Closer.”
Actor, Comedy Series: Larry David, “Curb Your Enthusiasm” HBO; Kevin James, “The King of Queens” CBS; Tony Shalhoub, “Monk” USA; Steve Carell, “The Office” NBC; Charlie Sheen, “Two and a Half Men” CBS.
WHO SHOULD WIN: Zach Braff from “Scrubs.” Oh, he’s not nominated? Really? But Charlie Sheen is? Insteresting. Okay then, Jason Lee for “My Name Is Earl.” What? He wasn’t nominated either? Hmm. Then I stand by my pick regardless, Braff deserves to get some kudos for his portrayl of JD on “Scrubs.”
WHO WILL WIN: Larry David seems to be the obvious choice, but the Academy may surprise us and give it to Steve Carell.
Actress, Comedy Series: Lisa Kudrow, “The Comeback” HBO; Jane Kaczmarek, “Malcolm in the Middle” Fox; Julia Louis-Dreyfus, “The New Adventures of Old Christine” CBS; Stockard Channing, “Out of Practice” CBS; Debra Messing, “Will & Grace” NBC.
WHO SHOULD WIN: Another tough category, with no real stand out. Lisa Kudrow was fabulous on “The Comeback,” but it’s hard to think that an actress would win from a show that was cancelled after only one season. However, Kudrow did prove she can play more than just a dumb blonde who plays the guitar.
WHO WILL WIN: I’m thinking it might be Messing, as this was “Will & Grace’s” last season, and she did show a lot of strength as an actor balancing the comedic with the drama.
