Aussie Women Give Cruise ‘Most Sexist’ Award
According to about 400 of Australia’s most influential women, actor Tom Cruise is the world’s most sexist celebrity.
The women gathered in the New South Wales state parliament on Thursday to vote on the 14th annual Ernie Awards, reports Reuters. The honours are given out to those making the year’s worst derogatory statements.
Cruise was up for the award on a comment he made about his then-pregnant partner, Katie Holmes. “I’ve got Katie tucked away,” he said, “so no one will get to us until my child is born.”
The awards got their name from a trade union leader named Ernie, whose union members included sheep shearers. “Women aren’t welcome in the shearing sheds,” he once said. “They’re only after the sex.”
The Golden Ernie for 2006 was given to P&O, a cruise company. They launched an ad campaign that featured postcards with bikini-wearing women and the caption, “Seamen Wanted.” P&O later apologized for the campaign.
