Actor Lou Diamond Phillips was arrested and jailed in the early hours of Friday morning. He was suspected of domestic abuse against his girlfriend.

Reuters reports that after police officers responded to a domestic violence call at Phillips’ home in Los Angeles, they arrested the 44-year-old.

“He was involved in a verbal argument with his live-in girlfriend which escalated to physical abuse,” said police spokeswoman Martha Garcia. “He was arrested on suspicion of co-habitant abuse.”

Garcia also said that Phillips was being held on $50,000 US bail.

However, the actor’s spokesman says that the incident was “a misunderstanding” and that Phillips has been let go.

“He was released on his own recognizance a little bit before noon,” said publicist Erik Bright. “There have been no charges pressed.”

Phillips is best known for his roles in the 1987 film “La Bamba” and the 1988 movie “Stand and Deliver,” the latter of which earned him a Golden Globe nomination.
