Mel Gibson Formally Charged with Driving Drunk
After shocking the world with drunken, anti-Semitic comments during his arrest last week, actor Mel Gibson has been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol.
Reuters reports that Gibson was also charged with driving with an open container of alcohol (tequila, specifically). The accusations were filed on Wednesday.
If he is convicted on the charges, Gibson could face up to six months in prison. He is scheduled to be in a Malibu court on September 28 for an arraignment.
The 50-year-old was arrested last Friday in the early morning. A sheriff’s deputy pulled Gibson over after seeing him speeding on the Pacific Coast Highway. During his arrest, he continually threatened the officer and inexplicably launched into an anti-Jewish tirade.
“F-ing Jews… The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world,” he said, according to various reports.
When Gibson was brought into the police station, he also addressed a female officer by reportedly saying, “What do you think you’re looking at, sugar tits?”
The Hollywood star has apologized for the comments and offered to meet with Jewish community leaders. He has also entered an alcohol rehab program.
