Mel Gibson’s Anti-Semitism Covered Up?
Mel Gibson is facing more than drunk driving charges after his arrest on Friday. Reports say that Gibson made several anti-Semitic remarks during the arrest, and that police have withheld details about the comments.
According to celebrity Web site TMZ.com, the arresting deputy’s report quoted Gibson as saying, “F—ing Jews. The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world.” Gibson was also quoted as asking the officer, “Are you a Jew?”
Gibson released a statement on Saturday, apologizing for both driving drunk and nonspecific “belligerent behavior” towards the arresting officers. He admitted to saying “things that I do not believe to be true and which are despicable.”
The 50-year-old actor also said in the statement that he had “battled with the disease of alcoholism for all of my adult life and profoundly regret my horrific relapse.”
Gibson has previously faced accusations of anti-Semitism. Many criticized his 2004 film, “The Passion of the Christ,” for suggesting that Jews were responsible for the death of Jesus.
According to the Los Angeles Times, a civilian committee that oversees the sheriff’s department will investigate whether or not police officers attempted to mask over Gibson’s behavior and statements.
