Despite their breakup, Justin Timberlake still wishes ex-girlfriend Britney Spears nothing but the best in life.

“I wish her well, and I want to see her win. I don’t think you can ever count somebody like her out because she may appear one way, but she’s very clever,” the singer tells next month’s issue of GQ magazine.

Timberlake and Spears first met when they were co-stars on the Mickey Mouse Club in the early ’90s, they began dating in 2000 and broke up in 2002.

“When we initially parted ways I felt like she had a couple opportunities to just sort of stick up for me, and she didn’t. Which is fine. But at that time, you know, I fought back. I used my mind. I came up with a song,” he says, which alludes to his smash hit “Cry Me A River” and its video which features a Britney look-a-like.

Timberlake also says his relationship with Spears was more like a high school romance, compared to his more adult relationship with actress Cameron Diaz. Timberlake says he learned to keep his relationship private with Diaz from the media frenzy that surrounded his romance with Spears.

The issue of GQ hits newsstands on July 25.
