A-Team star and kitsch icon Mr. T has given up his infamous gold chains out of respect for the victims of Hurricane Katrina.
Mr. T (real name: Lawrence Tureaud) announced the wardrobe change on Thursday at the Television Critics Association’s summer conference.
“I won’t wear it no more. It’s put up,” he said, according to E! Online. “I stopped wearing the gold as of last year during Katrina. See, as a spiritual man, I felt it would be a sin against my God for me to wear all that gold again because I spent a lot of time with the less fortunate.”
The ’80s personality went on to attack celebrities who toured the area affected by the hurricane simply for the good publicity.
“If you’re not going down there with a check and a hammer and a nail to help the people, don’t go down there,” said Mr. T.
The topic came up after he was questioned about his fairly low-key attire (including a tie).
Mr. T is currently busy promoting his upcoming television self-help series, I Pity The Fool.
