CBGB to Finally Close on Sept. 30
The iconic CBGB club in New York City is set to close its doors for good on September 30 after a lengthy battle with its landlord, the Bowery Residents’ Committee.
Rocks Off, a New York-based promoter, is setting up a number of special events for the club’s final weeks, promising appearances by “many of the artists who made CB’s famous.”
The non-profit Resident’s Committee houses 250 people about CBGB, its only commercial tenant.
After years of fighting over back rent between CBGB owner Hilly Kristal and BRC Executive Director Muzzy Rosenblatt, the BRC eventually went to court to collect the money. A deal reached last December had Kristal promising to vacate the space by Oct. 31, 2006, only after the club’s rent was raised from $19,000 US a month to $35,000.
Kristal hasn’t confirmed any plans to re-open CBGB at another location in the future.
