Darryl Hannah Booted from Tree
Actress Darryl Hannah was evicted from a walnut tree on Tuesday by police and firefighters. Authorities also removed dozens of other protesters from a community garden in Los Angeles that is slated for destruction.
The move ended a three-week effort to save the garden in the midddle of south L.A., reports Reuters. Celebrity supporters of the protest have included singers Joan Baez and Willie Nelson, in addition to hundreds of residents.
Hannah had spent 23 days in the tree by the time police moved in to arrest her. Both Baez and anti-logging activist Julia “Butterfly” Hill have spent time in the tree over the past three weeks, but neither were present when the force of more than 60 police officers showed up at dawn.
A legal fight for the land, between Los Angeles City Council and private developer Ralph Horowitz, had been going on for years.
Horowitz finally won ownership of the land in court. He plans to build a warehouse on the site.
Last month, he offered to sell the land to supporters of the garden for $16 million US. However, they were able to raise only about half that amount.
