The Omen Gives The Devil – And Hollywood – Its Due
They say that Hollywood must have sold its soul to the devil, but now we know the exact sum: $12,633,666.
Reuters reports that The Omen, a remake of the 1976 horror classic, opened yesterday to set a new box office record for Tuesday releases.
Twentieth Century Fox decided to open the film on June 6, 2006 to capitalize on the devilish allure of the number 666. Shrouded in superstition, the digits are known in Christianity as the “mark of the beast,” and in the movie, five-year-old devil spawn Damien has that number branded on his head.
The previous record-holder for a Tuesday debut was the Will Smith vehicle Ali, which grossed $10.2 million on Christmas Day 2001.
Fox insists that the last three digits of the box office gross really were 666, though only the devil may care.
