Dramatic rocker Meat Loaf has filed suit against two colleagues over trademark rights for the phrase “Bat Out of Hell.” He is seeking more that $50 million US in damages, according to E! Online.

Mr. Loaf (real name: Michael Aday) filed the suit on May 26 in Los Angeles, claiming that songwriter Jim Steinman ? who actually wrote the song “Bat Out of Hell ? wrongfully had the phrase trademarked as his own in 1995. Loaf’s former manager, David Sonenberg, is also named in the suit.

The complaint argues that Meat Loaf has used the phrase extensively since the 1977 album “Bat Out of Hell,” and that it should be legally tied to him and not Steinman.

Apparently, the need for a lawsuit arose after a recent falling out between Loaf and Steinman, which might threaten the singer’s ability to use the phrase.

In addition to the cash, the lawsuit asks the court to determine who should hold the rights to the phrase.
