Philadelphia rapper Beanie Sigel was shot in a robbery attempt on Thursday morning. He is in hospital recovering from the non-life threatening injuries, reports MTV.

A Philadelphia police spokesperson revealed that Sigel (born Dwight Grant) was in his car when five men approached him in two vehicles. One of the men opened fire, and Sigel was struck by one or two bullets in his upper right arm. He fled the scene and was able to drive himself to the hospital.

Ironically, the attempted robbery took place at the intersection of 22nd and Sigel Streets, the street that inspired his stage name.

The 32-year-old was released from prison in August after a one year stay for a weapons charge. The following month, he was acquitted of attempted murder. He was also jailed briefly in November for failure to pay child support.
