Robert Goulet Wants Canadian Citizenship
If he gets his way, Robert Goulet will soon be cruising for Big Horns in the backwoods of Canada as an official citizen. The 72-year-old singer is seeking Canadian citizenship in recognition of his ties to the country, the Canadian Press reports.
Though he now lives in Las Vegas, and was born in Massachusetts, Goulet spent many of his formative years north of the border. He moved to the Edmonton area at 13, spending six years in Alberta before relocating to Toronto for another seven.
In the mid-1950s, Goulet hosted weekly television variety show on CBC.
“I feel Canadian,” Goulet told CP. “I tried to become a citizen for a long time but the red tape is going to drive me nuts. It’s always red tape. I’ve got a senator from Alberta?working on it.”
The senator, friend and fellow musician Tommy Banks, says he’s discussed citizenship with Goulet many times over the last few years. The two first met in the early 1950s when they both worked for Alberta radio station CKUA.
Goulet hopes to finally settle the matter when he visits Toronto on June 3 to accept a star on Canada’s Walk of Fame.
