Britney Spears stumbled outside a New York hotel and almost dropped her 8-month-old son, adding to the growing controversy surrounding the pop star?s abilities as a mother.

Photos of the incident appeared in the New York Post on Friday, showing Spears holding a glass in one hand and Sean Preston in the other.

As bodyguards walked Spears to her car, her long pants apparently became tangled in her open-toed shoes. She tripped, and Sean Preston?s head flung backward as he nearly slipped from her grasp. But a fast-acting bodyguard helped Spears regain her balance and hold on to her son.

It?s the latest in a string of safety incidents to plague Britney and her baby. Earlier this week, she was photographed driving with Sean Preston in a forward-facing car seat. Some safety regulations recommended car seats face the rear. However, that incident was an improvement on February?s photo debacle, which showed Spears driving with Sean Preston in her lap.
