A musical that first appeared in the back room of Toronto’s Rivoli night club has gone on to storm Broadway in New York City.

“The Drowsy Chaperone” received 13 Tony award nominations on Tuesday ? more than any other production ? including Best Musical.

?Chaperone? was originally presented in 1998 by Bob Martin, Don McKellar and a host of others as a wedding gift for a friend. It stars Martin as an unnamed character in love with a 1920s musical that comes to life in his apartment.

The Tony Awards, presented for excellence in theatre, will be handed out on June 11 at Radio City Music Hall in New York.
