Poseidon Shipwrecked by Cruise’s Mission: Impossible III
Not even a raging tidal wave could topple Tom Cruise. Over a slow Mother?s Day weekend, ?Mission: Impossible III? held onto the top box office spot as ?Poseidon? debuted in second place.
The latest installment in Cruise?s spy flick franchise brought in an estimated $24.5 million US across North America, while its seafaring rival (based on 1972?s ?The Poseidon Adventure?) netted only $20.3 million.
In third place was Robin Williams? ?RV,? which kept on truckin? with a $9.5 million take, while Lindsay Lohan?s ?Just My Luck? opened in a fittingly disappointing fourth place, grossing only $5.5 million.
Overall, North American revenues were down more than 13 per cent from the same weekend last year. But all that is sure to change with the impending debut of ?The Da Vinci Code,? which opens this Friday.
Here?s how the complete top ten shaped up this weekend, according to the Associated Press:
1. ?Mission: Impossible III,? $24.5 million.
2. ?Poseidon,? $20.3 million.
3. ?RV,? $9.5 million.
4. ?Just My Luck,? $5.5 million.
5. ?An American Haunting,? $3.7 million.
6. ?United 93,? $3.6 million.
7. ?Stick It,? $3.2 million.
8. ?Ice Age: The Meltdown,? $3 million.
9. ?Silent Hill,? $2.2 million.
10. ?Hoot,? $2.1 million.
